Advent with the Masters

One of the Church’s great paintings each morning of Advent, from the First Sunday to Christmas, chosen by the liturgical calendar and captioned only from the holding museum’s own record.

After Christmas the letters go on through the Church’s year, and one click switches them to Sundays and feasts, or pauses them until next Advent. Offered to everyone; there is nothing to pay. Petrus Christus, The Virgin of the Dry Tree: Our Lady holding the Christ Child within a bare, thorny tree hung with golden letters
The Virgin of the Dry Tree, Petrus Christus, c. 1465. Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid.

The tree is dead, all thorns and bare limbs, and Our Lady stands in it holding the Christ Child, as if she had grown there. The Thyssen-Bornemisza ties the work to the Confraternity of Our Lady of the Dry Tree, to which Christus and his wife belonged.

How it works

One painting a morning

Each day of Advent brings one sacred painting, with the feast, the color of the day and the Scripture the scene depicts.

Only the museum’s record

Every caption is taken from the holding museum’s own record of the work. Nothing in it is generated.

Nothing to install

The letter needs nothing but your email: no account and no app. Each one is short enough to read before the day begins.
