Shut the organ and the Annunciation appears. These two canvases were the outer doors of the organ in the Venetian church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli; the Accademia explains that the Annunciation showed when the doors were closed, and Saints Peter and Paul, the Paul now lost, when they opened.
The Italian state catalogue points to the marble: the marbles of the room Gabriel enters recall the Miracoli's own interior, finished in 1489.
Designed by Bellini and probably painted by his workshop, the angel and the Virgin stand in a room made to recall the church they hung in.
The panels hang in a row at one image height; the hung images measure about 22.5 in across, before any gap between frames.
