Three men have left the world, and Bosch gives each a different place to pray. ColourLex sets them out: Anthony the Abbot in a nocturnal landscape with a burning village, Jerome praying in the desert at the center, and Giles praying in the grotto where he was shot with an arrow.
Anthony's prayer is the troubled one. A site devoted to his cult describes him beside a pond, drawing water with a jug, while demonic presences torment his meditations.
Look right: above Giles's grotto a luminous landscape opens, which the same site calls the most serene of the three panels.
The panels hang in a row at one image height; the hung images measure about 32.3 in across, before any gap between frames.
