This altarpiece was taken at sea. Memling painted it in Bruges for a Florentine banker's family chapel near Florence, and in 1473 the galley carrying it, the San Matteo, was boarded by privateers out of Gdańsk under Paul Beneke sailing the Peter von Danzig, and towed into Stade. The captors gave it to the three patricians who owned their ship, brothers of the Confraternity of St George, who gave it to the church. It never reached Italy.

The triptych open, as the museum shows it: the saved received at the gate of heaven, Christ in judgment over Saint Michael, the damned driven into hell. The three panels are one height in the object (224 and 223.2 cm) and print level within 3.83%.
