The hem of the Virgin's mantle slips across the seam into her Son's panel. Rogier painted two separate boards, and her grief does not stay on its own side of the join.
The Web Gallery of Art notes the near-grisaille of the draperies, white with only light tints of pink and blue, and a Christ who hangs like monumental sculpture. A high gray wall bars any landscape, and a red cloth of honour isolates the figures on each panel.
