Four narrow figures stand in a row, and one landscape runs behind them all, carrying on, darker, across the painted frames. Saint Francis holds his book; Gabriel comes with a lily; Our Lady presses her book to her body and lifts one hand; a bishop in a white mitre raises two fingers beside a curled staff. Between the second and the third the Word is made flesh, and the two stand a frame apart. The National Gallery of Art describes Francis's thin gold cross and the red wounds at his hands, feet and ribs. The bishop has changed names: from 1959 to 1985 the Gallery's catalogues named him Saint Maurelius, patron of Ferrara; he is now Louis of Toulouse, a prince who took Franciscan vows days before he was made bishop. Cosmè Tura sets a Franciscan at either end of the greeting.

Saint Francis, Gabriel, the Virgin, Saint Louis, left to right, as the National Gallery of Art shows them: one landscape runs behind all four.
