Jean Chevrot, bishop of Tournai, commissioned this altarpiece from Rogier van der Weyden and had himself painted into it administering Confirmation, laying hands on a child, while all seven sacraments are performed at once in a single Gothic church with the Crucifixion filling the nave. Stranger still: some of the faces around him were painted on small sheets of tin and fixed to the wood afterwards, likely portraits from life. No record of the commission survives, and its church is uncertain. Every sacrament is kept under one roof, and in the nave, above them all, the Cross.

The wings hang lower and shorter than the centre, as made: the three panels print at one scale (hang.level 'scale'; all three are cut from KMSKA's one photograph). Wall: wings 24 in, centre 40 in tall. Grand: wings 36 in, centre 60 in.
