Matthew's Gospel names six works of mercy. Van Orley paints seven. The KMSKA explains that those who performed them could be confident of their place in Heaven, and that he made the triptych for Antwerp's Chamber for Poor Relief, which dispensed the city's charity.
The wings carry six: drink, food and shelter at the left; clothes for disabled beggars and visits to a sick man and to prisoners at the right. Burial, the seventh, is one of Tobit's deeds. It sits in the center panel with the Judgment itself, where an inscription at lower left begins HIC JACET.
The three framed panels hang in a row at one image height; the hung images measure about 35.9 in across, before any gap between frames.
