About this painting

The saint's name is on the step, in capitals: .SS. HIERONYMVS. The painter's is on a slip of paper on the pilaster: Franciscus benalius, son of Pietro, dealer in cereals. Neither name held. Christie's sold the panel in 1805 as by Francesco di Ladi; a London sale in 1924 called it a St Francis by Crivelli; the 1951 Kress catalogue listed a St Anthony Abbot.

The Dizionario Biografico in 1966 called it a Saint Anthony, set in an architecture of mixed and veined marbles under an oval halo. Benaglio signed that architecture. Both names were on the panel all along.
