An old saint in a brown habit stands barefoot in a doorway of veined marble, a staff with a crucifix in one hand and a crutch in the other, and he has worn other names. The step names him .SS. HIERONYMVS, Saint Jerome. A slip on the pilaster reads Franciscus benalius, son of Pietro, dealer in cereals. The National Gallery of Art records how Christie's sold him in 1805 as by Francesco di Ladi, a London sale in 1924 called him a St Francis by Crivelli, and the 1951 Kress catalogue listed a St Anthony Abbot. Benaglio's name and the saint's were written there all along.
