A sword comes out of its sheath, and Saint Margaret kneels, fingertips together. In the Golden Legend the headsman refuses: God forbid that I should slay the virgin of Christ. She answers that if he does it not, he may have no part with her. Cesari paints what follows, the bare-chested man twisting round to draw. The Legend has a voice from heaven say the gates are open, and overhead the cloud is full: Our Lady and the Christ Child, one man with a key, one with a sword, an angel bringing crown and palm. The dragon, whose swallowing of her the Legend calls apocryphal, lies pinned under a shield.
