Domenichino paints the rebuke rather than the expulsion — the moment in Genesis when God asks the question and the blame begins to move, before anyone has been driven anywhere. The Roman collection that bought it had already decided otherwise: a 1679 Colonna inventory calls it Adam and Eve driven from the earthly paradise, so the title has been unstable since the seventeenth century. Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna paid seven hundred scudi for the picture in 1670, and it stayed with his family for well over a hundred years.
