A gold reliquary crosses the square among men in white, and what it holds, in Letha Ch'ien's account, is a fragment of the True Cross, the treasure of the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista. The brothers cross the foreground like a classical frieze, she writes, with the heavy candlesticks that were among their largest expenses. San Marco stands behind them in gold. Ch'ien names a kneeling man in the crowd as Jacopo de' Salis, a merchant from Brescia who came home to find his son recovered the day of the procession. Gentile Bellini sets the whole city behind one father's prayer.
