It is signed and dated to the month. OPUS GENTILIS DE FABRIANO MCCCCXXIII MENSIS MAII — the work of Gentile da Fabriano, May 1423. Palla Strozzi, banker, paid for it for the family chapel at Santa Trinita. The whole journey is in the panel: the star, the pause at Herod's palace, the ride home, three episodes divided by the three arches of the frame and rejoined by one rocky horizon. The spurs and the sword hilt are metal leaf, embossed into relief.
And entering into the house, they found the child with Mary his mother, and falling down they adored him: and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
