About this painting

Colmar puts the whole weight on the light. The museum's own words: a fantastic image whose luminosity transfigures the face of the Crucified into the face of God. The man who painted the most unbearable Crucifixion in Europe painted this on the other side of the same hinge, for a hospital where patients with ergotism were carried in to look at it. Christ leaves the tomb and goes up; the guards fall away. The museum names no verse.

And for fear of him, the guards were struck with terror and became as dead men.
