Her hand rests flat on the altar, as if to steady it, and her eyes have gone up past the candle to something above the picture. Ingres put her in full plate armour with a skirt of rose brocade over it, the standard in her right hand, the lilies of France on the dark hanging behind her, a thin gold halo over her hair. On the altar stand a monstrance, a crown on its cushion, a lit candle; at her feet lie her helmet and gauntlets, and behind her a tonsured monk reads from his book, two pages pray with joined hands, and a squire holds her lance. The Louvre records that the State commissioned the picture in 1851 and that Ingres signed and dated it in 1854, the year it was shown at Orléans for her feast and then at the Exposition universelle. The coronation at Reims was the end of what the voices had asked. She is not looking at the king.
