The Holy Spirit comes down as a dove through the vault in a burst of gold, and small flames fall like sparks on the heads below. Our Lady sits at the centre in blue, hands joined, eyes lowered; the apostles crowd close around her, the nearest two on low stools. Beneath, the prayer begins: Domine, labia mea aperies. Jean Bourdichon, court painter to four successive French kings, made the Katherine Hours among his earliest work; the Getty calls it a private prayer book built around the eight daily services of the clergy. In the borders an I and a K twine together, probably the initials of the couple who commissioned it. The lips open.
