About this painting

Berlin's curators read this praying Carthusian as a still life. Under hard light the cell offers up its objects for inspection — the big books, the crucifix, the console table, and an hourglass. The saint himself is a narrow profile, thin as the space between two of them. Le Sueur could have painted ecstasy. He painted furniture, and let the sand run beside the cross. The comparison the museum reaches for is Stosskopf, a Strasbourg specialist in painted objects.
