A swarm of demons hauls Saint Anthony into the air, all horns, beaks and clubs. The sky is theirs for an hour. Below, the ground keeps its ordinary weight: an old hermit holds a limp man in his arms beside a pig and two lions, and a crowned woman in red stands at the left. Maerten de Vos painted it in 1594 for Martin Delafaylle and Roger Clarysse, deans of the St Anthony confraternity, for their chapel in the Church of Our Lady in Antwerp, as the KMSKA records. At the right a demon in a funnel hat holds up a sheet as if to read from it.
