He prays that the chalice may pass, and the answer arrives in the air before his face: cherubs on a cloud, holding up the instruments of his torture and death. The National Gallery notes they look too heavy for the cloud.
A fig sapling has burst through the rock above the sleeping disciples, and the Gallery ties it to Judas, whom early legends made choose a fig tree for his gallows. The disciples lie like toppled Roman statues; Judas leads soldiers out of the city gates. Christ kneels before rocks the Gallery likens to an altar, complete with cross.
And going a little further, he fell upon his face, praying and saying: My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Nevertheless, not as I will but as thou wilt.
