About this painting

Christ blesses with his right hand and holds the world in his left: a clear crystal orb in which, the museum points out, his blessing hand and an entire cityscape are reflected. Gold, pearls and glass are imitated with the same brilliance. Attributed to Quinten Massys and painted in Flanders around 1500 to 1510, the panel came from a Spanish convent, passed through French and Company in New York to Samuel H. Kress in 1949, and was given to the North Carolina Museum of Art in 1960. Oil on panel, 53.3 by 36.8 cm.
