Saint Cecilia keeps her eyes on the keys of a small organ, and an angel holds up a sheet of music and watches her play. Diane De Grazia tells the story underneath: on her wedding night Cecilia told her husband Valerianus that she had asked God to keep her virginity, and that an angel had come to grant it. Orazio Gentileschi paints the company rather than the argument. The music the angel holds, De Grazia notes, has been impossible to identify. The canvas is the work of two hands, and Schleier's analysis and a rereading of the Rondinini inventory name the second as Giovanni Lanfranco's. After what were thought to be the saint's remains were found again in 1599, devotional images of her multiplied. The song on the sheet is still unread.
