The restoration found the painter's handwriting. Under the paint of this altarpiece were Rosso's own jotted notes naming which colour to lay into which passage, and reflectography showed the design drawn freehand in charcoal straight onto the gessoed panel. It also showed he changed his mind about the Virgin: first painted swooning, she ends grieving but alert, suspended between suffering and control. He was twenty-seven. The panel is nearly three and a half metres high.
