A blue cloak changes hands on a dusty road. Saint Francis, in red, holds it out; the poor knight, barefoot, presses his palms together; a grey horse waits behind. On the right the same young man sleeps in a bed of gold, an angel hovering over him, and in the sky a castle hangs with white banners and red crosses flying from its battlements. The National Gallery notes that the scripta, the document setting out the scenes, asked only for the moment Francis was shown that palace, and left some freedom to Sassetta and his two friar advisers; the story comes from Saint Bonaventure's Legenda Maior. The altarpiece stood six metres high on the high altar of San Francesco in Borgo San Sepolcro, installed in 1444, made of almost sixty pieces. Twenty-eight survive, scattered across the world. The castle is still in the air.
