A cloth canopy hangs over Our Lady, lifted on poles by saints, and the whole court of heaven stands under it with her. Two angels kneel at her feet holding up bowls of flowers. Siena's Museo Civico places the Maestà on the north wall of the Sala del Mappamondo, the Virgin enthroned as protectress of the city among her heavenly court, and lists what Simone Martini set into the paint: crystal, glass, parchment and metal foil. Michela Becchis, in Treccani's Dizionario Biografico, is exact: a real piece of rock crystal for the clasp of her mantle, églomisé glass, gold leaf, gilded metal, true paper for the books and scrolls. The Christ Child's scroll, she records, reads Diligite iustitiam qui iudicatis terram: love justice, you who judge the earth. The words are held out to the room.
