About this painting

John stands higher than Christ. Save Venice, whose project restored the canvas in 2004, reads the raised Baptist as Tintoretto quite appropriately humbling Christ, and the gesture of pouring water over his head as both elegant and natural. The light makes the same argument in reverse: Christ's body is lit, John's stays mostly in shadow.

The patrons were the bargemen's guild, and the landscape behind recalls the Venetian lagoon they knew. Matthew records John's protest at exactly this reversal. The picture keeps the protester above, pouring, and in the dark.
