A saint is known by his emblem, and this one's is buried. X-rays found a bull's head in the lower-left corner — Saint Luke's ox, already invisible when the picture reached Sir Richard Worsley. Without it the standing figure has been called Paul, Luke and Joseph.
Catherine appears to have come late: in the X-ray the standing saint's sleeve passes through her head. She may have replaced an intended donor.
The Child tips forward off balance, arms out to her, and she reaches back. The painting has always been called the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine. He holds no ring.
