Chevrot painted himself administering Confirmation. The bishop of Tournai who paid for this altarpiece stands inside his own picture laying hands on a child, while all seven sacraments are performed at once in a single Gothic church with the Crucifixion filling the nave. Stranger still: some of the faces around him were painted on small sheets of tin and fixed to the panel afterwards, portraits taken from life and inset in the studio. The commission is undocumented. The painted coats of arms are the evidence.
