Stars ring her head, twelve by the National Gallery's count, and the moon under her feet is clear as glass. Our Lady is a girl here, hands pressed together, eyes lowered in humility; Pacheco, Velázquez's teacher, wrote that she should be painted at twelve or thirteen. The Gallery tells us the canvas has a companion, Saint John on the Island of Patmos, where the evangelist sits with his quill poised and looks up at his vision of the Woman of the Apocalypse, and says we are encouraged to look here for a close view of her. X-rays show that her blue mantle once swept across her legs, and that Velázquez painted it out, perhaps to make their form clearer. Clouds bank on either side of her. Far below, in the dark land, stand a tree and a small fountain.
