About this painting

He is changing clothes. A coral-red garment falls from his hand onto a white one already on the ground; over the other shoulder hangs the brown skin. Web Gallery of Art knows no other picture of John at this moment, undressing for the desert.

The Gallery's reading is that the body is a Greek type, made a religious being by the golden halo; the bare mountains stress the desolation of the place he has chosen. The halo is a gold plate, edged red. Cover it with a thumb and an antique nude is left, undressing in the hills.

And the child grew and was strengthened in spirit: and was in the deserts until the day of his manifestation to Israel.
