Saint Jerome sits hunched on a rock in a blue cloak, barefoot, a small red book open in his hands, and he does not look up. From the dark of the cave behind him a lion's face looks out. Jerome put the Bible into Latin; the Vulgate is his. Alvise Vivarini signed it on a label at lower right, LVDVVICVS VIVARINVS PINXIT, the Latin form of a name Venice said as Alvise and the National Gallery of Art files as Luigi: a translated painter for the saint of translation. Gianmarco Russo, in the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, counts it among the two works where Alvise took up the manner of Antonello da Messina most fully, shining in a bath of silvery light that brings out the materiality of things. About 1476, tempera, thirty-one centimetres high. The light stays on the pages, and the old man reads on.
