
The angel is not consoling him. It holds a trumpet and points out of the picture, and Jerome turns from his own sentence with the pen still hovering over the scroll. A Barberini inventory drawn up between 1692 and 1704 already knew the painting by that one detail — a St Jerome with an angel holding a trumpet. On the desk beside his elbow: spectacles, an inkpot, a skull-white ball, and an hourglass.
