A golden horn comes over the old man's shoulder, right at his ear. The angel who holds it has snow-white wings and curly hair, and with the other hand points off to our left, beyond the edge of the canvas. Saint Jerome turns his head to look, the pen still on the page, his free hand thrown open. The National Gallery of Art's own description lists the desk: a crumpled cloth on a book, a rust-brown ball, spectacles, an inkpot, an hourglass, a second book. Simon Vouet painted it about 1622 to 1625, and the Gallery's provenance quotes a Barberini inventory of 1692 to 1704 that already knew it by that one detail, a Saint Jerome with an angel holding a trumpet. The sentence waits under his pen. The trumpet is at his ear.
