A thin white line crosses the room from a statue of Our Lady to the mouth of Saint Bernard. He kneels in his white habit, hands open, and receives it. The Prado is precise: Bernard takes the jet of milk from a carved Virgin and Child standing on an altar, not from a living apparition. Below, a cardinal watches with his hands joined in prayer, identified since the nineteenth century as Sandoval y Rojas, who as archbishop of Toledo brought the Capuchins to the city in 1611. Javier Portús calls the milk a reward for a life spent praising Mary. Alonso Cano lets it travel through empty air.
