An angel holds the dead Christ upright by the shoulders, and the body gives him no help. The angel is warm, Christ cold and bluish; the Prado notes the difference, and the twilight behind them. A basin sits on the ground, and the feet still carry their wounds. The Prado says plainly that the subject does not come from the gospels. It descends from the Christ of Saint Gregory, an image of Eastern origin, a pope's vision of the dead Christ between angels, to which indulgences for the dead were attached. Alonso Cano's change is to keep one angel, who holds Him up and presents Him to you.
