The nets are breaking and Peter has gone down on his knees in the bottom of the boat. Bassano takes his design from Ugo da Carpi's chiaroscuro woodcut after Raphael's cartoon, then does what Raphael never did — fills the foreground with fish, tackle, rope and working hands until the miracle happens inside a real day's labour. The National Gallery of Art locates the effect in rose red, ochre and green set against a broad expanse of blue water. Pietro Pizzamano, Venetian governor of Bassano, commissioned it in April 1545.
And when they had done this, they enclosed a very great multitude of fishes: and their net broke.
