Saint Peter, in ochre, has gone down on his knees in the boat, both hands open toward Christ, while behind him younger men bend over the side and haul in a net with fish in it. The work does not stop for the miracle; a man in rose steps across from one boat to the next. Bassano took his design from Ugo da Carpi's chiaroscuro woodcut after Raphael's tapestry cartoon, and the National Gallery of Art finds its effect in rose red, ochre and green set against a broad expanse of blue water. Pietro Pizzamano, Venetian governor of Bassano, commissioned it in April 1545. The net is still coming up.
And when they had done this, they enclosed a very great multitude of fishes: and their net broke.
