The Städel gives this panel to a Netherlandish master of about 1475, and its catalogue names his model: Dieric Bouts's Lamentation in the Louvre, painted around 1455–60 on a panel of 69 by 49 centimetres. This oak panel measures 70.1 by 50.7, the model's size almost to the centimetre.
The museum's record lists who is here and where. Mary, John the Evangelist and Mary Magdalene gather at the dead Christ on Golgotha, and the INRI title is written into the picture: a later painter keeping faith with an earlier one, down to the size of the wood.
