Two of the mourners were never at Calvary. Saint Dominic is among the saints around the dead Christ, and so is the Blessed Villana delle Botti. Italy's national catalogue explains why: her kinsman Fra Sebastiano Benintendi, who arranged the commission for the Compagnia del Tempio's oratory altar in 1436, had her image painted in, and Orlandi thought the patron himself appears as Dominic.
The painter signed for a payment that December, but the catalogue argues the panel was finished later, and points to the proof: on the border of the Virgin's veil, in brushed capitals, the year is written: MIIIIXXXX.
