About this painting
This image was written before it was ever painted. In 1703 a Capuchin friar in Seville had a vision of the Virgin and commissioned a picture of it to his own specification: red gown, blue mantle, shepherdess's hat, seated on a rock feeding roses to her flock, with Saint Michael rescuing a stray sheep from the Devil. Every Divina Pastora since has obeyed that brief. Cabrera's is nine inches of copper in a tortoiseshell frame.
