The light falls almost only on what saves: the angel's serene face, the ram he ushers in to die instead, the pyre, Abraham's hands — one holding the knife, one holding the boy still. Both faces, father's and son's, stay in shadow. Isaac never sees what takes his place, and the hand laid on him is the hand Genesis 22:12 stops.
Rediscovered in 1987, it was a Caravaggio for years, on Mina Gregori's word. Bologna proposed Cavarozzi in 1992; Spear and Papi followed. Genesis substituted a ram for the son. The catalogue substituted a follower for the master.
