A kneeling angel holds out fruit to the Child on His Mother's lap, and Saint Joseph rests on a rock a little way off. Matthew never halts the family on the road to Egypt. The stop comes from the apocryphal Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew, where Mary asks for fruit and the Child tells a palm to bend its branches and refresh His mother; a palm stands among the trees. Claude Lorrain, the Cleveland Museum of Art notes, set this event from the East in the Roman countryside, and such pictures sold across Europe as a calm retreat from the city. On the river a boat goes slowly by.
