A bunch of green grapes, and the Child's fingers at it, in His Mother's lap. John Oliver Hand, in the National Gallery of Art's catalogue, calls the grapes a well-known symbol of the Eucharist, and reads the plants along the bottom edge: plantain, a stauncher of blood, for Christ's death, mint, strawberry for the Trinity and the wounds, fern against evil, violet for humility. Matthew gives the flight, he notes, while the Rest comes from Pseudo-Matthew and The Golden Legend. Behind, Saint Joseph knocks down nuts with a long stick, which Hand reads as a variation on the palm miracle. Gerard David leaves the basket shut and the donkey waiting.
