Saint Genevieve holds up a candle that has gone out once already. The National Gallery tells how the devil blew it out while she prayed, and it lit again. Beside her Saint Apollonia keeps her eyes down and her hands folded over the pliers used to pull out her teeth at her martyrdom. Lucas Cranach the Elder painted them in 1506, soon after becoming court painter to the Elector of Saxony, as the outer face of a shutter on an altarpiece centred on Saint Catherine, likely for the electors' chapel at Wittenberg Castle. The flame stands straight, and the pliers rest in her hands like flowers.
