The lion sleeps on the floorboards with the dog beside him, and neither minds the other. Above them Jerome bends to his slanted writing table, and the room holds two lights: the sun through the round panes of the windows, and the light of his halo. The Met's curators find the two in perfect equilibrium, with the room's recurring horizontals adding to its repose. Of Albrecht Dürer's three Meisterstiche, the Met calls this the one whose interpretation seems most straightforward: Jerome, translator of the Vulgate and model of the Christian scholar, at work in a study of Dürer's own day. A skull rests on the sill. The hourglass keeps running.
