A fly sits on the marble ledge, and the Met says a viewer might be tempted to brush it away. The Child holds a goldfinch in both hands; above Him hang a cucumber and apples. The Met reads the sorting plainly: the apples and the fly stand for sin, the cucumber and the goldfinch for redemption and the soul. The National Gallery says Carlo Crivelli, probably trained with Squarcione in Padua, could have learned his festoons of fruit in that circle. Far off, the Met notes turbaned figures, possibly the Mamluks who held Jerusalem in the 1480s. Our Lady looks down past the bird. The fly stays.
