About this painting
A fly has landed on the parapet, painted so exactly that a viewer wants to brush it off the panel. That is the joke and the sermon together: corruption sits at the Virgin's feet, close enough to touch, and the hand that reaches for it touches only paint. Around it Crivelli hangs the answer — the goldfinch for the soul, the cucumber for redemption, the apple for the Fall. In the distance, turbaned figures. In the 1480s the Mamluks held Jerusalem.
