Four pairs of hands spiral around a small globe, and the globe is being handed over. The infant Baptist — patron saint of Florence — passes the world to the Christ Child. Vasari records the commission, from Giovanni Borgherini, and the Met dates the picture to about 1528, when Florence had thrown out the Medici and declared itself a republic again. It is an argument in paint about who rules the city, and its answer is not a family.
