
The cross does not rest on Christ's shoulder here; it pins him to the ground. Domenichino crowds every figure inward so the whole procession seems to bear down on the fallen man, then does the one thing that breaks the picture open — Christ looks out, past all of them, at you. A soldier gestures with his baton at Simon of Cyrene; behind him another hauls on the rope and lifts an arm to strike. It is painted on copper, whose smooth unabsorbent surface holds that much detail and that much colour at this size.
And bearing his own cross, he went forth to the place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha.
