The cross has come down, and Christ is under it, flat on the road, both hands and one bare foot against the dust. The men around Him crowd in. The J. Paul Getty Museum reads that crowding as the weight itself: the figures, it says, seem to bear down upon the heavy cross that pins Christ to the ground. A Roman soldier gestures with his baton at Simon of Cyrene; another tugs on the rope and raises his arm to whip. Domenichino painted it on copper, whose smooth surface, the Getty notes, holds fine detail and saturated colour at a small size. Christ, fallen, looks out, at you.
And bearing his own cross, he went forth to the place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha.
