Saint Catherine of Siena has both arms round the wood and her cheek against it, eyes closed, holding it as one holds a body, because it holds His. Saint Dominic, founder of her order, stands at the left, face lifted, hand open. Both wear the Dominican black and white. A small angel sits on the stone at the foot of the Cross, where Anthony van Dyck lettered his own name, Antonius van Dyck, and a skull lies below. The KMSKA dates the canvas, more than three metres high, to 1622 to 1627. Faint behind Catherine rises the silhouette of Antwerp Cathedral: Calvary, a short walk from home.
