One panel holds the whole of Good Friday and what followed it. At the left Christ carries the cross and Veronica hands him her veil. In the center his broken body hangs between the two thieves; at its foot the Virgin swoons as John and Mary Magdalene reach for her, and soldiers throw dice for his robes.
The Getty's curators note that this was once the central panel of a portable, three-part altarpiece devoted to the Passion. At the top right a monster devours souls. Below it, Christ has gone down into Limbo to rescue Adam and Eve.
