The infant is the first light here. El Greco makes him the source, not merely the subject lit, and that glow finds the shepherds' faces. Their limbs bend past what any body holds — postures the Grey Art Museum reads as constant praise, not reaction to a night's news.
Their crowded circle, the museum reads, reinforces the words at the elevation of the Host: the true body, born of the Virgin.
At least eight versions of this night stood in his studio when he died in 1614. His last version was made for his family's burial place in Toledo.
