Our Lady looks up, and no one else does. Cleveland's reading turns on that: the focus is on Mary, who alone is aware of the angels fluttering overhead with ribbons that carry the Gloria, "Glory to God in the highest: and on earth peace to men of good will." Saint Joseph and the shepherds stolidly regard the Christ Child. The museum finds in her face love, pride and humility at once. Bernardo Cavallino worked in Naples, little known in his lifetime, transforming his contemporaries' innovations with extraordinary delicacy. He signed on the ox, a BC monogram on its rump. Her hand stays on her heart.
