The whip has four short tails, and Christ holds it high across His body. Around Him the trade tumbles: a woman's hand on a cage of five white birds, an old man's basket of gold coins, rabbits nosing silver spilled from a pouch, a lamb tied to a stick, belly up. The National Gallery of Art explains how so uncommon a subject spread: the Council of Trent promoted it as a symbol of the Church purifying itself. El Greco, painting in Venice, set the purge in what looks like an Italian Renaissance palace, and signed in Greek beside the birdcage: Domenikos Theotokopoulos, Cretan. The birds are still in their cage.
